Unknown Identity

Unknown Identity

Everyone wants to be known. To matter to somebody. Our culture is in the midst of an identity crisis, but we worship a God who knows us.

Psalm 139
You have searched me, Lord, and you know me.

It’s a good thing that God has searched us and knows us. Because we have listened to the lies of the world, and we don’t know who we really are. We often don’t know what’s right or wrong. We try so hard to be inclusive, that we exclude anyone who doesn’t agree with our lists. Our list of what to think, what to say, what to feel. Sometimes we are scared to speak in public for fear of being called out or cancelled. One of the few groups still open to hostility is Christianity. So, we quietly hide until we start to question who we really are.

In this world that’s become so intolerant, many people will be cruel to those they have been told they should hate, so they won’t be the ones rejected. But there’s good news. God knows you. In the first 6 verses of Psalm 139, King David learns how well God knows him.

Psalm 139:1-6
You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. 2 You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. 3 You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. 4 Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely. 5 You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.

It feels so good to be known. The Hebrew word for “searched” means, “to dig.” The scripture is saying, Lord, You dig into me and you know me. God knows our choices, habits, thoughts, and feelings. He knowns our past and future, and He is active in our present.

King David is comforted by God’s knowledge of his life and His protection. We can also find comfort and rest in being know by a loving God.
