Psalm 3:1-2 Surrounded by Enemies
1 Lord, how many are my foes! How many rise up against me! 2 Many are saying of me, “God will not deliver him.
David’s enemies had driven him from the palace and surrounded him on every side.
He was taunted by a lie.
Psalm 3:3-6 Strengthened by God
3 But you, Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high. 4 I call out to the Lord, and he answers me from his holy mountain. 5 I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me. 6 I will not fear though tens of thousands assail me on every side.
David rejected the lie and found peace of mind in God’s character and protection.
Trust in the Lord leads to rest.
Psalm 3:7-8 Delivered by God
7 Arise, Lord! Deliver me, my God! Strike all my enemies on the jaw; break the teeth of the wicked. 8 From the Lord comes deliverance. May your blessing be on your people.
David was so sure that God would save him, he wrote as if it already happened.
1 Corinthians 1:8-11
We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about the troubles we experienced in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired of life itself. 9 Indeed, we felt we had received the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead. 10 He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us again. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us, 11 as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.
There’s a difference between escape and deliverance.
Deliverance only comes from the Lord.
