How much better to get wisdom than gold, to get insight rather than silver!

(Introduction: Proverbs 1:1-7)
In 1 Kings 3:5-9 God appeared to Solomon in a dream and offered him anything he wanted. Solomon asked for a discerning heart to govern the people and to distinguish between right and wrong. Solomon was the wises man in the ancient world. (1 Kings 4:29-33)

Proverbs 1:7
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

 

(Proverbs 1:8-9:18) Ten Speeches to a son from his father.

Proverbs 1:8
Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.

Wisdom leads to integrity, which leads to success and peace, while evil leads to pride, selfishness, and ultimately shame and destruction.

There are also 4 Poems of Lady Wisdom. Wisdom has been poetically represented as a woman.

Proverbs teaches us about God’s invitation to learn about wisdom from the examples of previous generations.

 

Chapters 10-29 Hundreds of proverbs about worship, work, family, money, generosity, character, sex, Justice.

If you honor God in how you live, you will experience eternal blessings.

Proverbs are not promises. (If you_____, then you_____.) Some things will go wrong.

Proverbs focus on the general rule, but it’s not a promise.

 

Chapter 30 has poems from Agur.

Admits his need for God’s wisdom. He finds his answers in the scriptures.

 

Chapter 31 has poems that are connected to Lemuel, a king who isn’t an Israelite.

He shares the wisdom that he learned from his mom. How to be a good and just leader.

The final poem is an acrostic poem where each line starts with a new letter of the Hebrew alphabet.

The whole poem is about a woman of noble character. She follows the Lords wisdom which is found in Proverbs, and turns that into good, practical, and every day life decisions in her family and community.
