I have lived in the greater Seattle area most of my life. So last year when the Seahawks won the Super Bowl, I was ecstatic. In 2014 the Seattle Seahawks defeated the Denver Broncos 43-8 in the Super Bowl. I got my boys out of school to go and celebrate at the parade downtown. We were in the front row watching the players pass by as we cheered, danced and yelled in celebration. I still remember so many small details about that day.
Imagine what it was like to be at the spiritual Super Bowl of all time. Jesus, being welcomed as the Messiah. The people had been waiting thousands of years to the Messiah to come and deliver God’s people. “Blessed is he who comes in the name of Lord.” Can you picture it? The crowd was going crazy with excitement and anticipation. So how is it possible for the crowds to go from cheering to condemning in less than a week? They have the wrong expectations. They were looking for the Messiah to deliver them from the Roman government. Their hopes and dreams were so small and self-focused. When our focus is on what God can do for me instead of what God’s words says I can do for Him, we miss the mark and our understanding of our purpose get corrupted. When we don’t know our purpose, our world can get very small and depressing very quickly.
Ephesians 2:10
For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Our purpose is to know Jesus, live for him, and make Him known. To cheer and celebrate who He is and what He has done for all of us.
Matthew 28:18-20
Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
